The British National Formulary is authored by the Joint Formulary Committee so to cite and reference the BNF in the Harvard  style it would be the following:

For the online BNF

  • Organisation (Joint Formulary Committee as they still compile the data)
  • Year that the site was published/last updated (in round brackets)
  • Title of the entry (in single quotes)
  • Title of web page (in italics)
  • Available at: URL (Accessed: date)

In-text citation is either:

Joint Formulary Committee (2024) OR, (Joint Formulary Committee, 2024)

And then, if you were referring to a particular drug, e.g., amoxicillin, then your reference would include that information so it could look like this:

Joint Formulary Committee (2024) 'Amoxicillin', in British National FormularyAvailable at: https://bnf.nice.org.uk/drugs/amoxicillin/ (Accessed: 21 September 2024)

If you were referencing the entire printed version then it would be the following:

Joint Formulary Committee. (2024). British national formulary 87: March - September 2024. London:  BMJ Publishing; Pharmaceutical Press.

OR

Joint Formulary Committee (2024) 'Amoxicillin', in British National Formulary. London: BMJ Publishing; Pharmaceutical Press. p.23
